Okoume faced plywood · Ha Hoa, Phu Tho, Vietnam
In short
Okoume plywood is a light, pinkish-beige veneer panel: okoume from Central Africa on the face and back, a plantation core inside. Minh Thanh Plywood presses it in Vietnam on white Styrax or Eucalyptus cores, 3–40 mm thick, sanded to ±0.2 mm, with UF glue at E0 emission as standard. European furniture and fit-out makers order it for warm, clear-finished parts that stay easy to handle.
As an okoume plywood supplier with our own presses in Ha Hoa, Phu Tho, we make 50,000+ m³ of panels a year, and Europe is our main market. Buyers usually order okoume in 15–18 mm for furniture, 9–12 mm for van linings and 3–4 mm for door skins and cabinet backs, often mixed in one container.
Watch first
This 4 min 44 s film, with captions, is the page for buyers who would rather watch. It explains what okoume is and why the core decides the weight, then the A and B faces, glue and the waterproof question, and the emission tests. It closes with okoume-faced panels against marine okoume, poplar and bintangor, the checks before loading and how to order.
Real sheets
These photos and the clip come from our own packs, taken as the sheets leave the line. Look at the whole sheet first: a light pinkish-beige face with a soft wave in the figure, and pale core layers at the pack edge.

Okoume shows its true colour in daylight, and the tone shifts a little from one veneer batch to the next. So we film your own sheets at final inspection, top sheet turned over and pack edge in view, and send the clips before the container is closed. You approve the look you are actually buying.
Specification
The full okoume plywood specification is on one table: okoume face and back, a stitched Styrax or Eucalyptus core, UF glue at E0 emission, 3–40 mm and a sanded tolerance down to ±0.2 mm. We confirm each row on the quotation.

Okoume sands to a soft, fine surface, but its fibres lift under dull paper. We finish the faces on fresh fine-grit belts and polish them before grading, so your finishing line starts from a smooth face. Clear lacquer, oil, stain, paint and HPL all take well, and both faces are ready for a UV coating line.

*Supplied directly or through qualified partner mills.

Face grades
Okoume faces are ordered as A or B, and hidden backs often as CC, the trade's name for a sound back grade. Face and back are priced as a pair, such as A/B, B/B or B/CC. We grade every sheet against the sample sheet you approve, so each grade name points to a face you have already seen.
A
Even pinkish-beige colour across the sheet and a soft figure; no open defects, only very small sound marks.
Application brief
Clear-lacquered doors and fronts, wall panels, shelves seen at eye level.
B (traded as BB)
Livelier figure with light and dark colour streaks; small sound knots and neat colour-matched patches allowed; fully sanded.
Application brief
Carcass sides, stained parts, and faces that will be painted, foiled or covered with HPL.
CC (backs)
Sound back with strong colour variation and more patches; no open holes; sanded flat so it glues and laminates well.
Application brief
Hidden backs, cabinet interiors, parts laminated or painted on both sides.

Pick the cheapest pair that still meets what the end customer sees. A clear-finished kitchen front wants A/B; a painted wardrobe carcass is well served by B/CC. Okoume veneer is imported, so the grade moves the price more than on a local face, and a lower back grade is the easiest saving on an okoume order.
Okoume colour runs from pale pink to a warmer salmon between veneer batches, and it deepens a little in daylight over the first months. For matched fronts or a clad wall, ask for one veneer batch per project; we keep those sheets together in the same bundles.
Core and construction
The core sets what an okoume panel weighs and how it holds screws, because the okoume face is a skin of only 0.2–0.5 mm. White Styrax, about 500 kg/m³, gives the lightest sheet and a pale edge. Eucalyptus, 650–750 kg/m³, gives a heavier, harder board.
| White Styrax core | Eucalyptus core | |
|---|---|---|
| Density | About 500 kg/m³ | 650–750 kg/m³ |
| 18 mm sheet, 1220 × 2440 mm | About 26.8 kg | About 34.8–40.2 kg |
| 12 mm sheet, 1220 × 2440 mm | About 17.9 kg | About 23.2–26.8 kg |
| 9 mm sheet, 1220 × 2440 mm | About 13.4 kg | About 17.4–20.1 kg |
| Edge colour | Pale cream layers under the pink face | Pinkish-brown layers close to the face colour |
| Screw holding | Good for furniture fittings | Firmer, for heavy hardware |
| Per 40HC | Up to 18 bundles, 53–54 m³ | Up to 15 bundles, about 43 m³ |
| Choose it for | Furniture fronts, wall panels, campers, low freight per sheet | Carcasses with hinges and loaded shelves, minimum-density specifications |

Okoume is never the core of a Vietnamese panel: it arrives as face veneer, and the inside is local plantation timber. On the core alone, an 18 mm sheet of 1220 × 2440 mm differs by 8–13 kg, so the core species belongs on every okoume order line.
Many European furniture buyers choose Styrax for its light weight and clean, pale edge, and van builders like it for the same reason. Eucalyptus earns its extra weight in carcasses that carry hinges, drawers and loaded shelves, and when a specification sets a minimum density.
Core veneers of 1.4–2.0 mm are laid crosswise and stitched across and along the grain. The joints stay shut in the press, so no gap shows through the thin okoume face. Thin panels of 3–6 mm are always five plies; an 18 mm panel has 11–13 plies, usually 11.
We press furniture-grade okoume plywood twice. The core board is pressed and sanded to an exact thickness first; then the okoume face and back go on for a second pressing, at about 110–120 °C with MR glue or 130–145 °C with phenolic WBP. A calibrated core lets a 0.3 mm face come out flat, without dips over core joints.
Sheet weight = sheet volume × core density.
Glue and emission
Okoume plywood resists water only as well as its glue line, and okoume wood itself does not last outdoors without a finish. Our standard UF glue at E0 emission suits dry rooms. Kitchens, bathrooms and vans take melamine-fortified MR glue; outdoor parts take phenolic WBP glue with sealed edges and a protective coat.
| Glue | Where it goes | Emission |
|---|---|---|
| UF (standard), at E0 emission | Furniture, cabinets and wall panels in dry rooms | E0; chamber tests 0.014–0.032 ppm (ASTM D6007) |
| E1 | Furniture for markets that specify E1 | E1 |
| MR / melamine-fortified | Kitchens, bathrooms, van interiors, 12-hour boil specifications | To the emission class on your order |
| Phenolic WBP | Outdoor furniture and parts with sealed edges | To the emission class on your order |
An okoume face does not make a panel marine. BS 1088 marine plywood is a certified build with durable plies throughout, no core gaps and a boil-proof bond; our okoume plywood is a furniture and interior panel and is sold as one. Cabin furniture, bathroom vanities and van fit-outs are where our MR and WBP okoume panels belong. For outdoor sheathing, see our exterior plywood.
Order glue and emission as two separate lines. The glue decides how the bond behaves when wet; the emission class decides how much formaldehyde the panel releases. A van builder might write "MR glue, CARB P2", a cabinet maker "UF glue, E0 emission".
On a test piece, our standard UF bond at E0 emission holds through about six hours of boiling. A 12-hour boil specification needs melamine-fortified glue, and exterior exposure needs phenolic WBP.
Our emission figures are chamber results. Between April 2025 and June 2026 Shanghai Hongjun and ICTT Vietnam ran six third-party tests to ASTM D6007 on 9, 15 and 18 mm panels, averaging 0.014–0.032 ppm. The CARB Phase 2 and TSCA Title VI limit for hardwood plywood with a veneer core is 0.05 ppm. We retest E0 every 3 months.
Do our okoume panels meet European requirements? Yes: they meet the emission levels European buyers ask for, including REACH entry 77 for furniture and wood-based articles from 6 August 2026. Our CARB P2 / TSCA Title VI certificate and chamber tests are the accepted proof, and SGS tests to EN 717-1 or another method when your customer wants a European report.
Working to EN 636? Class 1 is dry interior, class 2 humid interior, class 3 exterior. Give us the class and we choose the glue.
Sizes and cutting
Okoume plywood comes in 1250 × 2500 mm for European lines and 1220 × 2440 mm for buyers working in feet, from 3 to 40 mm thick. Custom formats such as 1220 × 2500 mm and 1220 × 2280 mm are pressed to order, and full panels can be cut into 4, 6 or 8 parts.
| Standard sheets | 1250 × 2500 mm and 1220 × 2440 mm, any thickness from 3 to 40 mm |
|---|---|
| Custom formats | Pressed to order up to 1250 × 2500 mm |
| Tolerance | Thickness down to ±0.2 mm on sanded panels; length and width ±2 mm |
| Cut to size | 4, 6 or 8 parts per panel, packed by part number |
Thickness follows the part. Okoume orders fall into three bands: 3–4 mm for door skins, drawer bottoms and cabinet backs, 9–12 mm for van wall linings and light shelving, and 15–18 mm for carcasses, doors and wall panels. Boards of 21–40 mm go into worktops, benches and shop counters.
Cut-to-size parts are sanded at full size first, then cut, so every part keeps the face grade and tolerance of the parent sheet. We ship cut-to-size loads to Italy and other European markets regularly, packed by part number. The soft okoume face chips easily where a saw exits, so the good face is kept up and protected in the stack.
Applications
Okoume plywood goes where a light, warm-toned panel will be seen: kitchen and living-room furniture, wall cladding, interior doors, camper vans and laser-cut work. Choose the core for weight and the glue for the room.

Okoume gives warm-toned kitchen fronts, wardrobes and wall units. Use 15–18 mm with A faces on visible fronts and MR glue near the sink; a calibrated sheet keeps hinge cups and drawer runners in line.

Large okoume panels of 9–18 mm clad hotel lobbies, offices and shops in a regular grid. Order A faces from one veneer batch for an even wall, and UV-ready faces if you coat on your own line.

Thin 3–4 mm okoume panels, always five plies, skin flush interior doors and stay flat across the leaf. Thicker sheets make sliding doors and wardrobe doors.

On a Styrax core, a 9 mm sheet of 1220 × 2440 mm weighs about 13.4 kg, which keeps lockers, kitchens and bed platforms light. Use MR glue in the living space and seal cut edges.

A calibrated sheet keeps laser focus and router depth the same across a job, and the light okoume face cuts cleanly. Thin okoume panels suit models, toys, displays and finger-jointed boxes.
Display units, counters and loudspeaker boxes take an okoume face for a warm finish, on a dense Eucalyptus core where stiffness and weight help.
A clear coat or oil keeps the pinkish-beige tone, which deepens slowly in daylight; a light stain evens out colour between sheets. B faces under paint or HPL save money on parts nobody looks at. Boat hulls need BS 1088 marine plywood, and concrete formwork needs film-faced plywood.
Compare
For a warm, light natural face at a fair price, okoume-faced plywood on a Vietnamese core is the usual choice. Full okoume and BS 1088 marine okoume cost more and earn it in boats and weight-critical work; poplar is plainer and cheaper; bintangor is darker and redder.

Against birch-faced plywood, okoume is pinker and warmer with a softer figure, and its face dents a little more easily. Pine-faced plywood brings knots and a rustic look. MDF is heavier, has no grain and holds screws poorly at the edge, while EV gives a perfectly even grain in many colours.
Okoume and bintangor are easy to mix up in a quotation, because both are red-toned imported faces. Okoume is pinkish-beige to pale salmon with a wavy figure; bintangor is redder-brown with a straight, interlocked stripe. We name the face species on the proforma and the bundle marks, and send close photos of your own sheets before loading.
Okoume plywood prices sit above poplar-faced panels and below full okoume or marine plywood. Within okoume-faced plywood, the price moves with the face and back grade, core species, glue, thickness and the share of thin sheets. To compare two offers fairly, line both up against the rows of our specification table.
Quality control
A light, soft okoume face shows dents, dirt and handling marks that a darker face would hide, so our checks cover the surface as closely as the build. Each order is graded against your approved sample, measured with a digital caliper and filmed before the container is closed. Your own inspector is welcome.

free samples in your thickness, grade and core; the sheet you approve becomes the grading standard.
okoume face veneer is sorted by colour and figure before lay-up, so one order keeps an even tone.
each sanded sheet is graded face and back against your sample under even light.
a digital caliper reads several points on sheets from every bundle against the ±0.2 mm sanded tolerance.
the edge shows stitched core layers, closed joints and even glue lines; flatness is checked on the pack.
packs are dusted and handled with gloves, and the top sheet is covered before wrapping.
sheets are turned over and caliper readings filmed for you; bundles are counted, marked and photographed in the container.
When the container arrives, check four things before production. Open one bundle in daylight and compare the face colour with your sample. Look for strap dents and water marks on the top sheets. Weigh one 18 mm sheet of 1220 × 2440 mm (about 26.8 kg means Styrax, 34.8–40.2 kg Eucalyptus), then read thickness with a caliper.
Keep okoume bundles flat on bearers, indoors and off concrete, with the wrapping on until use. Keep them out of direct sun as well: okoume darkens with light, and a half-uncovered pack can tan unevenly. Give the panels a few days in the workshop before machining.
Certificates and documents
Our okoume plywood ships with the documents EU and US buyers check: CARB P2 / TSCA Title VI certification as ICTT mill no. 23024, ISO 9001:2015 and TCVN 11902:2017. With EU orders we supply the EUDR compliance dossier (origin records and geolocation files), and our packaging passed an SGS packaging test under the EU PPWR. FSC and CE are available*.

Packing and loading
A 40HC holds up to 18 bundles of okoume plywood on a Styrax core, about 53–54 m³, or up to 15 bundles on the heavier Eucalyptus core. Bundles stand about 1,000 mm high, so an 18 mm order packs 55 sheets a bundle and 990 sheets a container on Styrax.
| Thickness (mm) | Sheets per bundle | Sheets per 40HC, Styrax core (18 bundles) | Sheets per 40HC, Eucalyptus core (15 bundles) |
|---|---|---|---|

A light okoume face needs more protection than a painted or film-faced panel. Each bundle gets cardboard over the top face and at the corners, strapping, wrapping film and plywood pallet blocks. The side is marked with thickness, grade, glue and core.
Sixteen bundles lie flat four by four and two stand at the door end. We do not load past that, because overloaded bundle feet crack and the cargo then comes out by hand. Eucalyptus-core loads stop at fifteen bundles on weight, about 43 m³. Thicknesses mix freely in one container; try your mix in our packing calculator.
Sheets per bundle = 1,000 mm ÷ thickness, rounded down; 1220 × 2440 mm sheets. Eucalyptus at 650 kg/m³ stays within 28,000 kg of panels, so its bundles hold a few sheets fewer.

Okoume face veneer is imported, so we reserve face veneer for your order when the deposit arrives and press the whole order from matched batches. The production time ends with the cargo ready at the factory; sea transit from Hai Phong comes on top.
First orders are often mixed: okoume in two or three thicknesses, or okoume alongside poplar or EV on the same cores. Give us your arrival date and we plan production backwards from it.
How to order
Ordering okoume plywood takes six steps, from your specification to the scanned B/L. The sample stage matters most with okoume, because its colour varies between veneer batches.
use, core, glue and emission class, face/back grade, thickness, size, packing, quantity and destination port.
price per m³ by thickness, FOB Hai Phong, CFR or CIF, with your specification repeated line by line.
free okoume samples in your grade and core; the sheet you sign off becomes the grading standard.
proforma invoice, 30% by T/T or an irrevocable L/C at sight; face veneer is reserved for your order.
15–45 days, with photos, clips and caliper readings of your own sheets before loading.
container photos and draft documents to approve, then the scanned B/L against the 70% balance.
Put these lines on the purchase order: face species okoume, the face/back pair (for example A/B or B/CC) and a colour range if fronts must match. Add the core species, Styrax or Eucalyptus, plus stitching, glue, emission class and test method. Then thickness and tolerance, sheet size or cut list, UV-ready faces, packing and marks. A complete order line is the best guard against a cheaper panel arriving under the okoume name.
FAQ
Short answers to what importers ask most about okoume plywood from Vietnam: what it is, water and marine use, cores, grades, okoume versus bintangor, price, loading and ordering.
Okoume plywood is plywood faced with okoume (Aucoumea klaineana), a light hardwood from Central Africa, mainly Gabon. The face is pinkish-beige with a soft, wavy figure and fine texture. In Vietnam okoume is imported as face veneer and pressed over a local core; Minh Thanh Plywood uses white Styrax or Eucalyptus cores, 3–40 mm thick.
Not by itself. Water resistance comes from the glue, and okoume wood does not last outdoors without a finish. Our standard UF glue at E0 emission is for dry interiors. We press okoume with melamine-fortified MR glue for kitchens, bathrooms and vans, and with phenolic WBP glue for outdoor parts with sealed edges.
No. It is a furniture and interior panel: okoume face and back over a Styrax or Eucalyptus core. Marine plywood to BS 1088 is a separate, certified build with durable plies throughout and a boil-proof bond. Buy BS 1088 plywood for boat hulls; for cabin furniture, vans and bathrooms, our okoume panels on MR or WBP glue do the job.
Styrax, if weight and a pale edge matter: about 500 kg/m³, or about 26.8 kg for an 18 mm sheet of 1220 × 2440 mm, and up to 18 bundles in a 40HC. Eucalyptus, at 650–750 kg/m³, if the panel carries hinges, drawers or heavy shelves. Many European furniture buyers choose Styrax for its light weight and clean look.
The strength comes from the core, because the okoume face is a skin of 0.2–0.5 mm. On Styrax the panel is light and stiff enough for furniture, doors and van interiors. On Eucalyptus it is denser and holds screws more firmly. Both cores are stitched both ways and pressed twice, so the panel stays flat with closed joints.
Faces are graded A or B, and hidden backs are often ordered as CC. A is even in colour, for clear-finished parts. B has more figure and colour streaks and suits stained, painted or laminated parts. Pairs such as A/B, B/B or B/CC are graded against the sample you approve.
Look at colour and figure. Okoume is pinkish-beige to pale salmon with a mild, wavy figure; bintangor is redder-brown with a straight, interlocked stripe. We write the face species on the proforma and the bundle marks, and send close photos and a clip of your own sheets before loading.
From 3 to 40 mm, on 1250 × 2500 mm or 1220 × 2440 mm sheets, plus custom formats such as 1220 × 2500 mm and 1220 × 2280 mm. Thin 3–6 mm panels are always five plies. Full panels can also be cut into 4, 6 or 8 parts and packed by part number.
UF glue at E0 emission is standard. Six third-party chamber tests by Shanghai Hongjun and ICTT Vietnam to ASTM D6007, run between April 2025 and June 2026 on 9, 15 and 18 mm panels, averaged 0.014–0.032 ppm. The CARB Phase 2 and TSCA Title VI limit is 0.05 ppm. E0 is retested every 3 months, and SGS tests to EN 717-1 when you ask.
Yes. Our okoume panels are made for European furniture buyers and meet the emission and quality requirements they ask for. European importers accept our CARB P2 / TSCA Title VI certificate (ICTT mill no. 23024) and chamber tests as proof. EU orders come with the EUDR compliance dossier (origin records and geolocation files).
Face grade first, because okoume veneer is imported: an A/B pair costs more than B/CC. Then the core species, the glue, the thickness and the sheet size. An order heavy in thin sheets costs more per cubic metre than one in 15–18 mm. Send your specification and we quote per cubic metre by thickness.
Up to 18 bundles on a Styrax core, about 53–54 m³, or up to 15 bundles on Eucalyptus. A bundle is about 1,000 mm high, so 18 mm sheets pack 55 to a bundle: 990 sheets per container on Styrax; on Eucalyptus, weight trims each bundle to 53, so 795. Different thicknesses can share one container.
One 40HC container, with thicknesses, grades and faces mixed by agreement. Production takes 15–45 days after the deposit. Payment is 30% deposit and 70% against the scanned bill of lading, by T/T or irrevocable L/C at sight, and we ship FOB Hai Phong, CFR or CIF. Samples are free.
Okoume plywood in Vietnam is made by factories that import okoume face veneer and press it on local plantation cores. Minh Thanh Plywood is one of them: a manufacturer in Ha Hoa, Phu Tho, with 50,000+ m³ a year and Europe as its main market. We ship to wholesalers and furniture makers across Europe, FOB Hai Phong, CFR or CIF.
Flat on bearers, indoors, off concrete and with the wrapping on until use. Keep the bundles out of direct sun, because okoume darkens with light and an uncovered top sheet can tan unevenly. Let the panels settle in the workshop for a few days before machining.
