What is the cost of plywood in the UK, and what does importing a container change?

Updated
Request a Quote

The cost of plywood in the UK at a merchant runs from about £29 to £89 per 18 mm sheet before VAT in October 2026, or about £540 to £1,660 per m³ of panel, because each sheet carries freight, duty, storage and a retail margin. An importer buying a container factory-direct starts from the mill price instead: Minh Thanh Plywood quotes furniture plywood from US$350/m³ FOB, and Vietnamese plywood enters the UK at 0% duty.

What does plywood cost in the UK in 2026?

The cost of plywood in the UK at a merchant ran from about £29 to £89 per 18 mm sheet before VAT in October 2026, or about £540 to £1,660 per m³, depending on species, grade, thickness and the merchant.

The cheapest full sheets are hardwood-faced and pine structural boards; birch and BS 1088 marine sit at the top. Shop prices for 2440 × 1220 mm (8 × 4) sheets follow:

Thickness, 2440 × 1220 mm Robert Price, Jade hardwood-faced, ex VAT (read 21 Oct 2026) Wickes, non-structural hardwood, inc VAT (read 1 Oct 2026) B&Q, hardwood plywood, inc VAT per sheet (read 1 Oct 2026) Price per m³, ex VAT

25 mm £41.90 n/a £64.92 (structural, pack of 3 at £194.76) about £565–725

At 18 mm the type changes the price more than the shop does:

Delivery is extra at most of these shops. B&Q charged £15 for home delivery on its hardwood plywood sheets, free on orders over £500; Wickes lists its sheet prices excluding delivery; Sheet Materials Wholesale cuts its price at 25–49 and 50+ sheets and offers next-day delivery inside the M25 on orders placed before 11 am (all read 1 October 2026). Mainstream UK stock is FSC eucalyptus hardwood-faced plywood from 3.6 to 18 mm, Brazilian or Elliottis pine structural plywood at 12 and 18 mm, and BS 1088 marine plywood bonded to EN 314-2 Class 3, as Jewson lists its range.

These are retail sheet prices for one buyer collecting a few sheets. They include the merchant’s freight, stock and margin, and VAT at 20% comes on top. They are a useful ceiling for a budget, not the price a container buyer pays.

Comparing on a per-m³ basis matters because UK listings mix sizes: an 8 × 4 sheet and a 10 × 5 sheet of the same thickness differ by more than 50% in volume.

Why is plywood expensive in the UK?

Plywood is expensive in the UK because nearly every sheet is imported and passes through several hands before it reaches a workshop. Each step adds its own cost:

  1. The mill price at the port of loading, set by face, core, glue and thickness.
  2. Ocean freight to Felixstowe, Southampton or another UK port, plus port and terminal charges.
  3. Import duty where the origin has no trade agreement, and import VAT at 20%.
  4. The importer’s margin, warehousing and the money tied up in stock for months.
  5. Distribution to the merchant’s branches, and the merchant’s own margin.
  6. Small-quantity handling: sheets are picked, cut or delivered one order at a time.

A furniture maker or shopfitter who uses several hundred sheets a month pays for steps 4 to 6 on every sheet. Buying a container from the mill removes them.

What drives the price of a plywood sheet?

Seven specification fields set the price of a plywood sheet, at the mill and at the merchant alike. Two quotes are only comparable when all seven match.

Price driver What raises the price What lowers it
Face veneer and grade Birch, okoume or selected faces; a high grade on both sides Engineered veneer (EV), poplar or eucalyptus faces; a lower back grade
Core All-hardwood or birch cores; stitched, void-free layers Plantation Styrax or Eucalyptus cores
Glue and emission Phenolic (WBP) bond; tested low-emission class UF glue for interior use
Thickness and tolerance Thick panels; tight sanding tolerance Thinner panels; commercial tolerance
Sheet size Oversize or cut-to-size panels Standard 1220 × 2440 mm
Quantity A few sheets or a mixed pallet A full 40HC container
Delivery term Delivered duty paid to your door FOB Hai Phong, with your own forwarder

For a buyer comparing a UK quote with an import quote, the last two rows usually explain more of the gap than the first five.

How do you convert a UK sheet price into £ per m³?

Divide the sheet price by the volume of one sheet: length × width × thickness in metres. Mills quote in cubic metres; UK merchants quote per sheet, so this one step makes the two comparable.

Thickness Volume of one 2440 × 1220 mm sheet Sheets in one m³
9 mm 0.0268 m³ about 37
12 mm 0.0357 m³ about 28
18 mm 0.0536 m³ about 18.7

Worked example: a sheet of 18 mm at £89.15 is £89.15 ÷ 0.0536 = about £1,660 per m³. Run the same sum on every quote, and keep the face, core and glue fields equal, before deciding which is better value. The plywood price by thickness guide takes the same method through 6 to 25 mm.

What does a Vietnamese mill charge at FOB?

Minh Thanh Plywood’s indicative starting prices in October 2026 are from US$250/m³ for commercial plywood and from US$350/m³ for furniture and interior plywood, FOB Hai Phong. The final price follows the seven fields in the table above: face, core, glue, thickness, size, quantity and delivery term.

Per sheet, from US$350/m³ is about US$18.75 for one 18 mm sheet of 1220 × 2440 mm at the port of loading, before freight, duty and VAT. That is the starting point an importer builds on, and it is why container buyers in the UK see a different price picture from merchant customers.

Our furniture panels are pressed twice: the core board is pressed and calibrated, then the face and back are pressed on. They are sanded to ±0.2–0.3 mm, down to ±0.2 mm, and glued with UF glue at E0 emission as standard. Those are the fields to hold fixed when you compare our quote with any other.

What import duty does plywood from Vietnam pay in the UK?

Vietnamese plywood enters the UK at 0% duty with valid origin proof. The UK Trade Tariff shows a 0% preferential rate for Vietnam from 1 January 2025 under the UK-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (UKVFTA), checked 20 October 2026.

Plywood line (HS 4412) UK Global Tariff Vietnam origin under UKVFTA
Hardwood face such as poplar, birch or eucalyptus (4412 33) 6% 0%
Other non-coniferous face (4412 34) 6% 0%
Some tropical-faced lines (4412 31 10) 10% 0%

Three points keep the 0% rate in practice:

  1. Origin proof. The certificate of origin or origin statement the agreement accepts, issued for the shipment. Without it the UK Global Tariff rate applies.
  2. The right commodity code, agreed with your customs broker before the invoice is issued. Face species and thickness decide the subheading.
  3. Matching documents. Invoice, packing list and bill of lading show the same description, quantity and weight.

Import VAT at the standard 20% rate is charged on top of the customs value. A VAT-registered importer normally reclaims it. The import duty on plywood from Vietnam guide covers other destinations.

How do you work out the landed cost of plywood to a UK port?

Landed cost is the mill price plus everything paid until the plywood stands in your yard. Build it per m³ in six steps:

  1. FOB price per m³ from the mill’s quotation.
  2. Ocean freight per m³: the container rate from your forwarder divided by the cubic metres loaded (about 53 m³ of 18 mm on a Styrax core).
  3. Insurance, if you buy FOB or CFR; it is included under CIF.
  4. UK port, terminal and customs-clearance charges, divided by the same m³.
  5. Duty: 0% for Vietnamese origin with origin proof; otherwise the UK Global Tariff rate on the customs value.
  6. Haulage from the port to your site, divided by the m³.

Add the six lines and divide by the sheets per m³ to get a price per sheet you can set beside a merchant’s. Import VAT sits outside this sum when you can reclaim it.

Keep FOB, CFR and CIF quotes apart. Under CIF the mill books freight and insurance; under FOB you choose the forwarder and pay freight at your end. The trade terms page shows what each term includes with Minh Thanh.

How does container loading change the cost per sheet?

Freight is paid per container, so the more cubic metres a container carries, the less freight each sheet pays. Core species decides that number, because a heavier core fills the payload before it fills the space.

18 mm, 1220 × 2440 mm Packs per 40HC Sheets per 40HC Volume Sheet weight
White Styrax core 18 (55 sheets each) 990 about 53 m³ 26.8 kg
Acacia core 16 (55 sheets each) 880 about 47 m³ 31.1 kg
Eucalyptus core 15 (53 sheets each) 795 about 43 m³ 34.8 kg

On the same freight bill, a Styrax-core container spreads the cost over 990 sheets instead of 795: each sheet pays about one-fifth less freight. The loads follow our 40HC plan: packs about one metre high, then capped by weight at a planning payload of 28,000 kg unless your booking is lower. Our packing calculator gives the count for other thicknesses.

How long does plywood take to reach the UK from Vietnam?

Plan about two to three months from order to UK port. Production takes 15–45 days after the 30% deposit, and the sea leg from Hai Phong to Northern Europe takes about 30–40 days, by carrier and route.

That lead time is part of the cost. A UK importer holds stock for the time between orders, so a regular container every one or two months, with mixed specifications, keeps the yard stocked without buying from a merchant to fill gaps. Every shipment is photographed and filmed before loading, so you see the packs before the vessel sails.

UK plywood lead time: production 15–45 days, sea transit 30–40 days, about two to three months overall

Is cheap plywood in the UK worth buying?

Cheap plywood in the UK is worth buying for site hoarding, packing cases and temporary work, where face, flatness and emission do not matter. For furniture, cabinets and shopfitting, a low sheet price often hides a cost later in the workshop.

Check these points before you accept the lowest price:

  1. Core gaps and overlaps: cut one sheet and look at the edge.
  2. Thickness tolerance: measure several sheets with a caliper; ±0.5 mm or more causes steps in carcass joints.
  3. Glue and emission: ask for the glue type and an emission test with its method.
  4. Face grade and repairs: compare both faces with the grade you were quoted.
  5. Sheet weight: an unusually heavy sheet of the same thickness often means a denser, mixed core.

A sanded furniture panel at ±0.2–0.3 mm with a stitched core costs more per m³ than a commercial board at ±0.5 mm, and saves rework on every cabinet. Our outer two to four core layers are stitched horizontally and vertically, and all layers on request.

Which marks and documents does plywood need in the UK?

Furniture and interior plywood needs no product marking in Great Britain; structural plywood for construction works needs construction-product marking to EN 13986. The documents you need depend on what the plywood is for.

Use in the UK What to ask the mill for
Furniture, cabinets, interiors Emission proof such as CARB P2 / TSCA Title VI certification and chamber tests; species and origin for your timber due diligence
Construction works (structural) A product marked for construction use under EN 13986, with its declaration of performance
Packing and crates ISPM 15 marks on any solid wood bearers; plywood itself is exempt

EUDR is EU law and does not apply to plywood imported into Great Britain. A UK importer still runs due diligence under the UK Timber Regulation, and the same origin records help. Minh Thanh supplies the EUDR compliance dossier (origin records and geolocation files) with orders. For emission, we hold CARB P2 / TSCA Title VI certification (ICTT mill no. 23024), and six ASTM D6007 chamber tests from April 2025 to June 2026 averaged 0.014–0.032 ppm against the 0.05 ppm limit set by the US EPA. CE is available* for buyers who need it.

*Supplied directly or through qualified partner mills.

When does importing a container beat buying from a UK merchant?

Importing beats a merchant when you use about one container of plywood every one to three months and can store it. Below that volume, a merchant’s stock and next-day delivery are worth the margin.

Your situation Better route
A few sheets a week, many specifications UK merchant or importer’s stock
Several hundred sheets a month in two or three specifications Container factory-direct, mixed load
A fixed furniture or packaging programme Container factory-direct, repeat orders on the approved sample
Urgent jobs with no lead time UK stock, then plan the next container

Minimum order with Minh Thanh is one 40HC, with mixed specifications by agreement: usually one or two specifications per container, more by agreement. Free samples let you test the panel in your own workshop before the first container.

How can UK buyers lower plywood cost without weakening the specification?

Lower the cost through the fields that do not change performance in your product. Six moves work on most UK orders:

  1. Grade the back to its use: an A/B or D+/D face/back pair costs less than the same grade on both sides when the back is hidden.
  2. Choose the core for the load: a white Styrax core is lighter and fills 990 sheets of 18 mm in a 40HC.
  3. Specify the tolerance you need: ±0.2 mm for CNC cabinet work, ±0.5 mm for commercial use.
  4. Order standard 1220 × 2440 mm unless a custom size such as 1220 × 2500 mm saves cutting waste.
  5. Combine specifications in one container instead of two part-loads.
  6. Keep the approved sample as the reference, so repeat orders do not need new trials.

The plywood price guide explains each price field in more depth, and the 4x8 plywood price guide converts inch sizes.

What should you send to get a plywood quote for the UK?

Send the specification line, the quantity and the UK port; we reply within hours. A complete UK request reads like this:

18 mm furniture plywood, 1220 × 2440 mm, poplar face A/B, white Styrax core, UF glue at E0 emission, sanded ±0.2 mm, export packing, one 40HC, CIF Felixstowe.

Add what the plywood is for, any second specification for a mixed load, and your origin-proof and VAT details for customs. Send it to [email protected] or through the quotation form; the furniture plywood from Vietnam page shows faces, cores and grades to choose from.

Buyer questions, answered

How much does a sheet of plywood cost in the UK?

In October 2026 an 18 mm hardwood-faced sheet of 2440 × 1220 mm cost £29.24 before VAT at Robert Price and £35.80 including VAT at Wickes; 12 mm cost £19.72 and £27.65, and 9 mm £15.47 and £24.55. BS 1088 marine ran £67.93–77.40 and birch throughout £89.15 per 18 mm sheet before VAT.

Why is plywood so expensive in the UK?

Almost all plywood sold in the UK is imported. A merchant sheet carries the mill price plus ocean freight, port and haulage charges, warehousing, the merchant's margin and 20% VAT, and it is sold one sheet at a time rather than by the container.

What is the cost of plywood per m³ in the UK?

Divide the sheet price by the sheet volume. An 18 mm sheet of 2440 × 1220 mm holds 0.0536 m³, so £29.24 per hardwood-faced sheet is about £545 per m³ and £89.15 per birch sheet is about £1,660 per m³, both before VAT.

Is there import duty on plywood from Vietnam to the UK?

No duty with valid origin proof. Under the UK-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement the UK Trade Tariff shows 0% for Vietnamese plywood lines from 1 January 2025, against 6% for most plywood lines and 10% for some tropical-faced lines under the UK Global Tariff.

Do I pay VAT on imported plywood in the UK?

Yes. Import VAT at the standard 20% rate is charged on the customs value plus duty and freight. A VAT-registered business normally reclaims it through its VAT return.

Where does cheap plywood in the UK come from?

Most low-priced sheets are commercial or packing grades from Asian mills, with mixed or heavier cores, wider thickness tolerance and lower face grades. They suit hoarding, packing and site work; for furniture, check the core, the glue and the tolerance before comparing price.

What is the cheapest way to buy plywood in the UK in volume?

Buy a full container factory-direct. One 40HC carries 990 sheets of 18 mm furniture plywood on a white Styrax core, and Minh Thanh accepts mixed specifications in one container by agreement.

How long does plywood take to ship from Vietnam to the UK?

Production takes 15–45 days after the 30% deposit, then the sea leg from Hai Phong to Northern Europe takes about 30–40 days, by carrier and route.

Does plywood sold in the UK need UKCA or CE marking?

Only plywood placed on the GB market for use in construction works under EN 13986 needs construction-product marking. Furniture and interior plywood does not.

Does EUDR apply to plywood imported into Great Britain?

No. EUDR is EU law. Great Britain runs its own timber rules, and Minh Thanh's EUDR origin dossier, with species and harvest origin, also serves a UK importer's due diligence.
