The price of birch plywood is set by how much birch is in the panel and how well it is graded. All-birch Baltic panels cost the most and birch-faced plywood on a plantation-hardwood core costs less; face grade, glue, thickness, size, quantity and Incoterm move the price within each. Minh Thanh Plywood, a manufacturer in Phu Tho, quotes furniture and interior plywood from US$350/m³ (October 2026). This guide explains each price driver, why birch ply is so expensive, and how to turn a price per cubic metre into the price of a 3/4 inch 4x8 sheet.
Price of birch plywood: the short answer
The price of birch plywood depends first on how much birch is in it and how clear that birch is. All-birch (Baltic birch) panels sit at the top; birch-faced panels, with birch only on the face and back, cost less per cubic metre.
At Minh Thanh Plywood, furniture and interior plywood starts from US$350/m³ and commercial plywood from US$250/m³ (indicative starting prices, October 2026). The final price depends on face, core, glue, thickness, size, quantity and delivery term.
| Price driver | Lower price | Higher price |
|---|---|---|
| Birch content | Birch face and back only | Birch in every ply |
| Face grade | E/E, D/E | D/D, D+/D |
| Core | Commercial core, loose layers | Stitched, calibrated Styrax or Eucalyptus |
| Glue and emission | Standard UF glue | UF glue at E0 emission, MR or phenolic (WBP) |
| Thickness | Thinner sheet, less wood | Thicker sheet, more wood |
| Size and cutting | Standard 1220 × 2440 mm | Custom sizes, cut-to-size |
| Sanding and tolerance | Unsanded, ±0.5 mm | Sanded and polished, ±0.2 mm |
| Quantity | Full 40HC | Part loads, many specifications |
| Delivery term | FOB Hai Phong | CFR, CIF |
The sections below take each driver in turn, then show how to turn a price per cubic metre into the price of one sheet.
Why is birch plywood so expensive?
Birch plywood is expensive because birch is a slow-growing northern hardwood, clear birch faces are a small share of each log, and all-birch panels use many thin plies of it. Supply has also narrowed since 2022, when the EU banned wood products from Russia and Belarus. Five factors add up:
- Limited birch supply. Birch for plywood comes from northern forests in Finland, the Baltic states and, before 2022, Russia.
- Grade yield. Only part of each log gives clear, knot-free face veneer. The rest goes into lower grades or the core.
- Thin plies. All-birch panels use many thin veneers, which means more peeling, drying, gluing and pressing per sheet.
- Lost Russian supply. Since 2022 the EU has banned wood products from Russia and Belarus, so European buyers draw on fewer mills. The European Commission’s announcement of 14 May 2024 links the extension of the anti-dumping duties on birch plywood to Russian producers looking for other channels after the 2022 ban.
- Production costs. Glue, energy for drying and pressing, and labour all sit in the price, and they are higher in northern Europe.
Birch-faced plywood answers most of these. It keeps birch only where it is seen, on the face and back, and uses a plantation-grown core for the rest of the panel.
Birch-faced vs Baltic birch: why is there a price gap?
The price gap between birch-faced plywood and Baltic birch comes from the core. Baltic birch is birch in every ply; birch-faced plywood from Vietnam is an imported birch face and back on a white Styrax or Eucalyptus core grown in northern Vietnam.
| Line | Baltic birch (all-birch) | Vietnamese birch-faced (Minh Thanh) |
|---|---|---|
| Face and back | Birch | Imported birch veneer |
| Core | Birch veneers | Styrax or Eucalyptus veneers, stitched both ways |
| Face grades | B, BB, CP, C | D+, D, E (D+ ≈ B, D ≈ BB, E ≈ CP/C) |
| Typical format | 1525 × 1525 mm, also 1220 × 2440 and 1250 × 2500 mm | 1220 × 2440 and 1250 × 2500 mm, custom sizes |
| Weight at 18 mm, 1220 × 2440 mm | Heavier | 26.8 kg on Styrax |
| Edge | Uniform birch plies | Birch face lines over the core |
| Price | Highest per m³ | Lower per m³ |
The face is the same species on both, graded on a comparable ladder, so the finished cabinet looks the same. You pay the Baltic birch premium when the birch edge or an all-birch specification matters.
Our Baltic birch plywood price guide covers the all-birch side of the market in detail.

How does face grade change the price of birch plywood?
Face grade changes the price because higher grades need clearer veneer, and clear veneer is a small share of every log. Vietnamese mills name birch faces D+, D and E, from highest to lowest, and quote them as face/back pairs.
| Vietnamese pair | Comparable European pair | Typical use | Price position |
|---|---|---|---|
| D+/D | B/BB | Clear-lacquered show faces | Highest |
| D/D | BB/BB | Cabinet sides, shelving | Middle |
| D/E | BB/CP | One show face, one hidden | Lower |
| E/E | CP/C | Painted or hidden parts | Lowest |
The back grade matters as much as the face. A panel with one show side does not need the same grade on the back, and pricing the back down is one of the simplest savings on a birch order.
Order appearance is fixed by an approved sample, so the grade you pay for is the grade you approved. Our guide to plywood samples explains how to approve one.

How does the core change the cost of birch-faced plywood?
The core is most of the panel’s volume, so its species and grade move the price of birch-faced plywood more than any line except the birch face. The core also sets the weight of each sheet, and the weight sets how much fits in a container.
Minh Thanh furniture panels use white Styrax or Eucalyptus cores as standard. Reference densities are about 500 kg/m³ for Styrax, 580 kg/m³ for Acacia and 650 kg/m³ for Eucalyptus.
| 18 mm, 1220 × 2440 mm | Styrax core | Acacia core | Eucalyptus core |
|---|---|---|---|
| Weight per sheet | 26.8 kg | 31.1 kg | 34.8 kg |
| Sheets per 40HC | 990 | 880 | 795 |
| Volume per 40HC | about 53 m³ | about 47 m³ | about 43 m³ |
A lighter core carries more cubic metres for the same freight, so the landed cost per sheet falls even when the FOB price per cubic metre is similar. Many European furniture buyers choose Styrax for that reason and for its pale colour under a birch face.

How do glue and emission class change the price?
Glue type and emission class are two separate lines on the order, and each changes the price. Moisture-resistant glues cost more than standard interior glue, and lower emission classes cost more than higher ones.
- UF glue at E0 emission is the standard furniture build at Minh Thanh, for dry interior use.
- MR or melamine-fortified glue is made to the customer’s specification for humid rooms.
- Phenolic (WBP) glue is made to specification for exterior and heavy-duty uses.
For emission, Minh Thanh holds CARB P2 / TSCA Title VI certification (ICTT mill no. 23024). Six ASTM D6007 chamber tests between April 2025 and June 2026, on 9, 15 and 18 mm panels, averaged 0.014–0.032 ppm. The limit for hardwood plywood made with a veneer core is 0.05 ppm under EPA formaldehyde emission standards. Because E0 is the standard build, a furniture buyer does not pay a premium for a separate low-emission grade.
How does thickness change the price of a birch plywood sheet?
Thickness changes the price of a sheet almost in proportion to the wood it contains, because birch plywood is priced per cubic metre. An 18 mm sheet holds twice the wood of a 9 mm sheet of the same size.
| Thickness, 1220 × 2440 mm | Volume per sheet | Sheets per 40HC (Styrax) | Weight per sheet (Styrax) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 9 mm | 0.0268 m³ | 1,998 | 13.4 kg |
| 12 mm | 0.0357 m³ | 1,494 | 17.9 kg |
| 15 mm | 0.0447 m³ | 1,188 | 22.3 kg |
| 18 mm | 0.0536 m³ | 990 | 26.8 kg |
| 21 mm | 0.0625 m³ | 846 | 31.3 kg |
| 25 mm | 0.0744 m³ | 720 | 37.2 kg |
Thin panels need more veneer handling per cubic metre. Our thin plywood is always 5-ply from 3 to 5 mm, and because premium thin veneer is scarce, 4 mm orders can take longer; we do not lower the standard to go faster.
The rate per cubic metre also includes real thickness. A sheet sold as 18 mm and delivered at 17 mm holds about 5.6% less wood; written tolerances, such as ±0.2 mm on sanded furniture panels, keep the comparison honest.
What is the 3/4 birch plywood 4x8 price?
The 3/4 birch plywood 4x8 price is the price per cubic metre multiplied by the sheet volume, about 0.0536 m³ for a metric 18 mm sheet of 1220 × 2440 mm. The same formula works for every thickness.
Price per sheet = price per m³ × length (m) × width (m) × thickness (m).
- A 4x8 sheet is made as 1220 × 2440 mm, an area of 2.98 m².
- 3/4 inch is 19.05 mm. Most Asian mills supply 18 mm for this order; some supply 19 mm.
- At 18 mm the sheet volume is 1.22 × 2.44 × 0.018 = 0.0536 m³.
- Using the October 2026 furniture/interior starting reference of US$350/m³, a raw FOB example gives about US$18.75 for the volume of one sheet before freight, duty and margins.
That figure is a raw FOB example calculated from the broad furniture/interior starting reference. A birch-faced order is quoted by its own specification. A retail sheet in Europe or North America adds sea freight, duty, the importer’s and distributor’s costs, and stock-holding. A 1/2 inch sheet (made as 12 mm) holds 0.0357 m³ and converts the same way.
Our plywood price per cubic metre guide gives the conversion for every thickness, per sheet, per square metre and per kilogram.

What does a 3/4 inch birch plywood sheet cost on a US shelf?
In the United States a 3/4 inch 4x8 birch plywood sheet sells for about US$85 at a big-box store and US$99.90 to US$169.90 at a specialist Baltic birch shop. The US$18.75 figure below is a raw FOB example based on the broader furniture/interior starting reference. Construction, finish, freight, duty and retail costs explain parts of the gap. Prices below were read from the retailers’ pages in October 2026.
| Price reference (October 2026) | Sheet or calculation basis | Shelf price / raw FOB example |
|---|---|---|
| Home Depot | 3/4 in. 4x8 birch hardwood plywood, veneer-core | about US$85 |
| Berta Store | 3/4 in. 4x8 Baltic birch, BB/BB | US$99.90 |
| Berta Store | 3/4 in. 4x8 Baltic birch, B/BB | US$116.90 |
| Berta Store | 3/4 in. 4x8 Baltic birch, prefinished | US$169.90 |
| Minh Thanh, raw FOB example | 18 mm 1220 × 2440 mm volume at the furniture/interior starting reference | about US$18.75 (US$350/m³ × 0.0536 m³) |
Retail costs and order size also affect the gap. Retail prices carry sea freight, duty, the importer’s and the distributor’s margins and stock-holding, which the FOB figure leaves out. Retail shops also sell one sheet at a time: Berta Store takes 15% off from 20 sheets and 20% off from 50 sheets. A 40HC of 990 sheets is far beyond that tier.
For a buyer reading this as a margin check, use the selling price for an equivalent construction, grade and finish, then subtract the landed cost per sheet (the container’s FOB value plus freight, duty and clearance, divided by 990 sheets on a Styrax core). The difference must cover your own operating costs and profit. The landed-cost list further down shows each line.
How do size and cut-to-size change the price?
Standard sizes give the lowest price per cubic metre; custom sizes and cut-to-size add work but can lower the cost of each finished part. Minh Thanh presses 1220 × 2440 and 1250 × 2500 mm sheets, plus custom sizes such as 1220 × 2500 and 1220 × 2280 mm.
- 1250 × 2500 mm holds about 5% more area than 1220 × 2440 mm, so its sheet price is higher at the same rate per cubic metre.
- Custom sizes cut waste when your parts repeat in one length.
- Cut-to-size splits one panel into 4, 6 or 8 pieces at the mill, a format we ship regularly to Italy and other European markets.
Compare quotes on the cost of the parts you cut, not only the cost of the sheet. A slightly dearer sheet that yields one more part per sheet is the cheaper buy.
How do quantity, packing and Incoterm change the price?
Quantity, packing and Incoterm change the price per cubic metre after the panel itself is fixed. A full container of one or two specifications, packed to the mill’s standard and bought FOB, gives the lowest rate.
- Quantity: Minh Thanh’s minimum order is one 40HC. A container usually carries 1–2 specifications, and mixed loads of more specifications are possible by agreement.
- Packing: export packs about 1,000 mm high on pallets with covers and straps are standard; custom labels and edge marks are added on order.
- Incoterm: FOB Hai Phong covers the goods loaded on board; CFR adds sea freight; CIF adds freight and insurance.
Freight is quoted per container, so the core matters again here. A Styrax-core container carries about 53 m³ of 18 mm panels, while a Eucalyptus-core container carries about 43 m³, and the same freight is spread over fewer cubic metres.
Where is birch-faced plywood good enough, and where should you pay for Baltic birch?
Birch-faced plywood is good enough wherever the face is what the customer sees and the edge is banded, painted or hidden. Pay for Baltic birch where the edge is part of the design or a specification names birch in every ply.
| Use | Birch-faced | Baltic birch |
|---|---|---|
| Kitchen and wardrobe carcasses | Good choice | Overspecified |
| Shelving and interior fit-out | Good choice | Overspecified |
| Painted or laminated furniture parts | Good choice, or a poplar or EV face | Overspecified |
| CNC parts with banded edges | Good choice | Possible |
| Drawer boxes with lacquered edges | Only if the core edge is acceptable | Good choice |
| Exposed-edge furniture and display | With a solid-wood lipping | Good choice |
| Specs that name all-birch | Not compliant | Required |
Most furniture plants find that the larger share of their birch volume sits in the first four rows. Moving those parts to birch-faced plywood is where the saving on a birch budget comes from.
How do you compare birch plywood quotes?
Compare birch plywood quotes line by line before comparing prices: birch content, face and back grade, core, glue and emission, thickness and tolerance, size, sanding, packing and Incoterm. Two quotes for “18 mm birch plywood” often describe different panels.
- Ask whether the panel is all-birch or birch-faced.
- Write the face/back grade on the same ladder for every quote.
- Name the core species and whether it is stitched.
- Separate glue type from emission class.
- Get the thickness tolerance in writing.
- Convert every price to one unit, one currency and one Incoterm.
- Test samples before deciding.
Our guide on how to compare plywood quotations gives a comparison sheet and a worked example of two 18 mm quotes.
What does a landed birch plywood price include?
A landed price adds everything between the mill and your warehouse to the FOB price. Build it per container, then divide by the cubic metres or sheets in that container.
- FOB price for the container, from the proforma invoice.
- Sea freight from Hai Phong to your port, quoted per container.
- Insurance, usually a small percentage of the cargo value.
- Import duty and tax at your border, on the customs value. The UK Trade Tariff finds the plywood commodity code and duty.
- Destination port and clearance charges.
- Inland transport to your warehouse.
The core shapes this calculation, because freight and port charges are per container. A lighter Styrax core spreads them over more cubic metres than a denser core. The plywood price guide sets out a full landed-cost worksheet.

Buyer questions, answered
Why is birch plywood so expensive?
Birch plywood is expensive because birch veneer is a northern hardwood with limited supply, good faces are a small share of each log, and all-birch panels use many thin plies of it. Since 2022 the EU ban on Russian wood products has also removed a large low-cost source.
What is the price of birch plywood from Vietnam?
Birch-faced plywood is quoted by specification. Minh Thanh Plywood quotes furniture and interior plywood from US$350/m³ (October 2026). The final price depends on face grade, core, glue, thickness, size, quantity and delivery term, so it is quoted per specification.
Why is birch-faced plywood cheaper than Baltic birch?
Birch-faced plywood uses birch only for the face and back; the core is plantation-grown Styrax or Eucalyptus. Baltic birch uses birch in every ply. Less birch per cubic metre means a lower price, with the same birch face.
How do I work out the price of an 18 mm birch plywood sheet?
Multiply the price per cubic metre by the sheet volume. A 1220 × 2440 × 18 mm sheet holds 0.0536 m³, so the sheet price is about 0.0536 times the m³ price, before freight and duty.
What is a 3/4 birch plywood 4x8 sheet in metric?
A 4x8 sheet is made as 1220 × 2440 mm, and 3/4 inch is 19.05 mm, which most mills supply as 18 mm metric plywood. Check the actual thickness on the quote, because 18 mm and 19 mm sheets are priced on different volumes.
Does face grade change the price of birch plywood much?
Yes. Higher birch face grades need clearer veneer that fewer logs yield. A D+/D panel, comparable to B/BB, costs more than D/D, comparable to BB/BB, which costs more than D/E or E/E.
Does the core species change the cost of birch-faced plywood?
Yes, in two ways. The core species sets the price of most of the panel's volume, and its density sets the weight: an 18 mm sheet weighs about 26.8 kg on a Styrax core and 34.8 kg on Eucalyptus, which changes how much fits in a container.
Is it cheaper to buy birch plywood by the container?
Yes. Buying a full 40HC direct from a mill removes the importer's and distributor's margins and spreads freight over about 53 m³ of Styrax-core 18 mm panels. Minh Thanh's minimum order is one 40HC, with mixed specifications by agreement.
Does E0 or CARB P2 make birch plywood more expensive?
Low-emission glue costs a little more than standard glue. At Minh Thanh, UF glue at E0 emission is the standard furniture build and CARB P2 / TSCA Title VI certification covers it, so there is no separate low-emission grade to pay for.
Is birch-faced plywood good enough for furniture?
For carcasses, cabinets, shelving and painted or veneered parts, yes: the face is real birch and the core is stitched and calibrated. Visible-edge designs that show birch plies in the edge keep all-birch panels.
